We did have a good day on the lower river with my friend Martin and son Andrew from Killyleagh on the last Saturday of the Eden season. Andrew had only one Spey casting lesson beforehand when the river was in flood and very soon adapted that to a fishing situation with a very strong north west breeze blowing. There were one or two fish showing in the pool when we arrived, Martin had given Andrew a Faughan Shrimp fly to try which has proven quite successful of late. The first run down with a light tip on did not do anything for the salmon, when the tip was changed to a much heavier one to suit the flow……
The fish did not want to make any acquaintance at all with Andrew!
So far so good with Martin looking on.
Another run!
Another run with good pressure applied
Nicely netted Martin!
Unhooked in the water
First salmon on the fly!
Released, a beautiful fish, a great feeling!
It was not long before Martin had a take also and got this fish of around six pounds a little later which was also released. We had also heard later that afternoon Martin’s wife Meave had got a salmon on the Annan the same day, talk about keep it in the family!
